Several hours later Zane lay awake in his bed. He stared out his bedroom window at the lights of San Francisco Bay twinkling in the distance. The same words repeated themselves over and over in his head: that’s what I love about you Zane.

He readjusted the pillow under his head for what had to be the tenth time in the last half an hour and decided that it was going to be a hell of a long night.

Chapter 8

Shannon walked out of the administration building and spotted Zane immediately, which really wasn’t all that difficult. The Porsche’s convertible top was down, and Zane was learning against the passenger door, looking far too handsome for his own good--and hers. He waved to her, and a zing of awareness shot through her entire body.

“Hi. Thank you for picking me up.”

Zane smiled back at her. “Of course. I told you, it wasn’t going to be an issue. In fact, it worked out great. The boys and I had a good time today.” He took her tote bag from her hand and set it in the backseat before he opened the car door for her.

“I’m glad you had fun. They enjoyed the park?”

“Of course. They liked going for ice cream and then to the candy shop after, even more.”

“I’m sure you ruined their dinner.”

“Absolutely.” He winked at her. “They were pretty worn out when I dropped them off. I’m sure Jake and Kimberly will thank me when they are fast asleep before seven tonight.”

“Or curse you when they are the boys are too wired from all of the sugar to sleep tonight.”

“Huh. I hadn’t thought of that.” He smirked at her before he walked around to the driver’s side.

“Right.”

“Well? How did it go?” he asked once they were both inside the car and had fastened their seatbelts. “I thought I’d be able to gauge some type of reaction from you, good or bad, but your expression is not giving anything away.”

She turned her head toward him and long strands of her hair fell softly over the front of her shoulder before she could brush them away from her face. “It went well.” She shrugged, and her earlier smile faded. She tried to be excited about the last several hours she had spent with each of the two professors, both of whom she liked within minutes of meeting, but she didn’t have it in her. She was conflicted about the decision she would need to make in the coming weeks, and being seated next to Zane, watching his interest in her response light up his eyes, didn’t make it any easier on her. “Recommendations are going in front of the Department Chair next week for a final decision. They have some other grants under consideration, but the two Directors I met with said that they didn’t foresee any problems.” She shrugged again with an air of indifference as he pulled out of the parking lot and on to a main street that lead to them to the highway.
